  2.  #31-37 Here is a cure of one that was deaf and dumb. Those who
  3.  brought this poor man to Christ, besought him to observe the
  4.  case, and put forth his power. Our Lord used more outward
  5.  actions in the doing of this cure than usual. These were only
  6.  signs of Christ's power to cure the man, to encourage his faith,
  7.  and theirs that brought him. Though we find great variety in the
  8.  cases and manner of relief of those who applied to Christ, yet
  9.  all obtained the relief they sought. Thus it still is in the
  10.  great concerns of our souls.

  12.  * Four thousand fed by a miracle. (1-10) Christ cautions against
  13.  the Pharisees and Herodians. (11-21) A blind man healed. (22-26)
  14.  Peter's testimony to Christ. (27-33) Christ must be followed.

  17.  #1-10 Our Lord Jesus encouraged the meanest to come to him for
  18.  life and grace. Christ knows and considers our frames. The
  19.  bounty of Christ is always ready; to show that, he repeated this
  20.  miracle. His favours are renewed, as our wants and necessities
  21.  are. And those need not fear want, who have Christ to live upon
  22.  by faith, and do so with thanksgiving.

  25.  #11-21 Obstinate unbelief will have something to say, though
  26.  ever so unreasonable. Christ refused to answer their demand. If
  27.  they will not be convinced, they shall not. Alas! what cause we
  28.  have to lament for those around us, who destroy themselves and
  29.  others by their perverse and obstinate unbelief, and enmity to
  30.  the gospel! When we forget the works of God, and distrust him,
  31.  we should chide ourselves severely, as Christ here reproves his
  32.  disciples. How is it that we so often mistake his meaning,
  33.  disregard his warnings, and distrust his providence?

  36.  #22-26 Here is a blind man brought to Christ by his friends.
  37.  Therein appeared the faith of those that brought him. If those
  38.  who are spiritually blind, do not pray for themselves, yet their
  39.  friends and relations should pray for them, that Christ would be
  40.  pleased to touch them. The cure was wrought gradually, which was
  41.  not usual in our Lord's miracles. Christ showed in what method
  42.  those commonly are healed by his grace, who by nature are
  43.  spiritually blind. At first, their knowledge is confused; but,
  44.  like the light of the morning, it shines more and more to the
  45.  perfect day, and then they see all things clearly. Slighting
  46.  Christ's favours is forfeiting them; and he will make those who
  47.  do so know the worth of privileges by the want of them.

  50.  #27-33 These things are written, that we may believe that Jesus
  51.  is the Christ, the Son of God. These miracles of our Lord assure
  52.  us that he was not conquered, but a Conqueror. Now the disciples
  53.  are convinced that Jesus is the Christ; they may bear to hear of
  54.  his sufferings, of which Christ here begins to give them notice.
  55.  He sees that amiss in what we say and do, of which we ourselves
  56.  are not aware, and knows what manner of spirit we are of, when
  57.  we ourselves do not. The wisdom of man is folly, when it
  58.  pretends to limit the Divine counsels. Peter did not rightly
  59.  understand the nature of Christ's kingdom.

  62.  #34-38 Frequent notice is taken of the great flocking there was
  63.  to Christ for help in various cases. All are concerned to know
  64.  this, if they expect him to heal their souls. They must not
  65.  indulge the ease of the body. As the happiness of heaven with
  66.  Christ, is enough to make up for the loss of life itself for
  67.  him, so the gain of all the world in sin, will not make up for
  68.  the ruin of the soul by sin. And there is a day coming, when the
  69.  cause of Christ will appear as glorious, as some now think it
  70.  mean and contemptible. May we think of that season, and view
  71.  every earthly object as we shall do at that great day.

  74.  The apostles reproved. (30-40) Pain to be preferred to sin.

  77.  #1-13 Here is a prediction of the near approach Christ's
  78.  kingdom. A glimpse of that kingdom was given in the
  79.  transfiguration of Christ. It is good to be away from the world,
  80.  and alone with Christ: and how good to be with Christ glorified
  81.  in heaven with all the saints! But when it is well with us, we
  82.  are apt not to care for others, and in the fulness of our
  83.  enjoyments, we forget the many wants of our brethren. God owns
  84.  Jesus, and accepts him as his beloved Son, and is ready to
  85.  accept us in him. Therefore we must own and accept him as our
  86.  beloved Saviour, and must give up ourselves to be ruled by him.
  87.  Christ does not leave the soul, when joys and comforts leave it.
  88.  Jesus explained to the disciples the prophecy about Elias. This
  89.  was very suitable to the ill usage of John the Baptist.
